Cannes, France – Quentin Dupieux’s latest cinematic offering, “Full Phil,” made a distinctive splash at the 79th annual Cannes Film Festival, culminating in a lively five-minute standing ovation for its cast, particularly star Kristen Stewart, despite a somewhat mixed critical reception.
The film, an absurd comedy, brings together the unlikely father-daughter duo of Woody Harrelson and Kristen Stewart, who embark on a journey to Paris with the intention of reconnecting. However, their Parisian sojourn quickly devolves into a series of bizarre encounters, including peculiar French cuisine, a 1950s horror movie, and an overly inquisitive hotel employee, all contributing to Dupieux’s signature brand of surreal humor.
While the midnight screening at the Palais des Festivals on May 16, 2026, elicited laughter from the audience, some critics found the film to be slightly overstretched and repetitive, as noted by TheWrap. Despite this, the audience’s enthusiasm for the cast, especially Stewart, was undeniable.
Stewart, who previously premiered her directorial debut “The Chronology of Water” at Cannes, expressed her admiration for Dupieux’s unique filmmaking approach in an interview with Variety. “I love his movies. They just don’t look or feel like anyone else’s, and those are the types of directors that actors are so lucky to be able to follow,” she stated, highlighting Dupieux’s hands-on, auteur-like style.
The red carpet event saw a star-studded attendance, including Eric Wareheim, Tim Heidecker, Emma Mackey, Charlotte Le Bon, and Hugo Selignac, alongside the film’s leads. The collective presence of such a diverse and talented ensemble further amplified the buzz surrounding “Full Phil” at one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals.
