Cannes, France – April 22, 2026 – The 79th edition of the Festival de Cannes has unveiled its official poster, featuring the iconic heroines of Thelma & Louise, marking 35 years since the film’s original release.
The poster highlights a black-and-white still from Ridley Scott’s 1991 classic, showing Susan Sarandon as Louise looking directly at the viewer while Geena Davis as Thelma gazes toward the horizon. The pair are seated in a 1966 Ford Thunderbird convertible, capturing the film’s enduring themes of freedom, rebellion, and female solidarity.
Directed by Ridley Scott and written by Callie Khouri, Thelma & Louise was first released on May 20, 1991. The film quickly became a cultural landmark, redefining the road movie genre with a female-driven narrative at a time when such perspectives were rare in mainstream cinema.
Starring Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis, the film sparked debate upon release but went on to achieve lasting critical and popular acclaim. It is now widely regarded as a cult classic, noted for its exploration of friendship, autonomy, and resistance against societal constraints.
Festival organizers said the choice of Thelma & Louise for this year’s poster reflects both celebration and reflection—honoring progress in the representation of women in cinema while acknowledging ongoing conversations around equality and freedom.
Ridley Scott, who previously won the Jury Prize for Best Debut Film at Cannes in 1977 for The Duellists, is once again being recognized for a work that continues to influence global cinema decades later.
The official poster is now available for pre-order through the festival’s official store.
